System Reboot

I’ve been failing horribly at keeping up this blog, even though I felt re-energized at New Year’s. So here’s my attempt to reboot. Hopefully, the worst of winter has passed, the sun will start coming out more, I’ll get the hang of this working-woman thing, and I can get it together enough to start doing things that I need to and want to do instead of just falling asleep on the couch with Netflix on. My January goals weren’t quite met. I did study Portuguese about 4 hours a week, but I only read one book and started another that, mid-February, I still haven’t finished. I didn’t make 60 pushups, in fact, I really didn’t do many pushups at all in January or this month either. BUT what I did do, is finish this 30 Day Beach Body Challenge. Mind you, I still wouldn’t consider myself having a beach body, but I wasn’t totally lazing about. But since the 30 day challenges aren’t quite intense enough, I’ve embarked on 3 more 30 day challenges, to …

December Challenge

Anyone following my blog must know by now that I love to give myself short-term personal challenges. They’re usually around fitness and nutrition, but sometimes they’re creative too. I like doing this, it gives you something to focus on outside of stressing over work or school, or sitting on the couch watching television. Finishing them means you get to celebrate personal victories more often–which is nice, especially since most personal victories are long drawn out processes that can cause you to lose motivation periodically (i.e. finishing a degree, getting a promotion, etc.) This month’s challenge is a fitness challenge, which I’m already in the middle of. I always tell myself I wanted to have more upper body strength, and what better way than push ups. Most people do not, or cannot, do push ups–CORRECTLY. Especially women!! I mean there are, of course, a multitude of variations on the push up (wide-arm, diamond, elbows out, elbows in, dive bombers, one-armed…), but most of us aren’t doing any of them. My formula for the month is: the …

INSANITY–2 weeks down

I’ve completed two weeks of INSANITY, and I honestly think I’m starting to see some results. I don’t have a scale so I don’t know how much or if I’ve actually lost pounds, but I feel like my clothes are starting to fit better, so that’s a plus. My problem is, that I think is a pretty common problem, is that I build muscle mass pretty quickly. So while I may be getting right and tight, I also get kinda bulky, especially my legs. I haven’t quite figured out the right formula of diet and exercise that allows me to get lean without getting big–maybe there isn’t one. Who knows? But every two weeks on the workout you have to do a fit test. The goal, of course, being to get better each time. There are 8 exercises and you do them each for a minute with a brief rest in between. I definitely improved on most exercises, only one stayed the same. Again, it’s very apparent that my weaknesses are really quad/glutes because anything …

Challenges

My 30 day challenge has gone to the wind. I haven’t posted my last few workouts, although they’ve been pretty spread out over the last week or two. Moving, trying to catch up on schoolwork, starting work, starting cooking again, etc. has created a crazy sleep deficit that makes me quasi-deep-sleep-narcoleptic. So exercising just hasn’t been happening. However, I have been eating very well. I wanted to do a month of being a vegan, and that hasn’t been quite up to par between the superbowl and these pizza lunches every Tulane meeting has. But I haven’t been eating very much junk (minus the one trip to Tastee Donuts, which I don’t regret at all). Anyway, I haven’t had any meet minus a bit of seafood and my dairy intake has decreased vastly. I get crazy cravings for cheese and I have mostly ignored them. I think after mardi gras I will commit more fully. Although, honestly, with crawfish season arriving I think my diet will look more like a lactose-intolerant-pescatarian. HA! Anyway, today’s exercise was …

30 Day Challenge: Revised

Okay, so I was trying to follow the 30 day challenge posted on the BodyRockTV website, but with the new trainers and format, they are just using WAY too much equipment for me. It used to be pretty balanced where maybe 1 exercise in the combo had minimal equipment (like a sandbag that I could sub for a backpack filled with books, or just do unweighted entirely). But now every other exercise requires something and they’ve even started incorporating new equipment. With that said, I went back through the archives of workouts to the earlier ones, which were almost entirely bodyweight. So I’m going to choose from those from now on (especially since I prefer Zuzana, the original trainer, to the new ones). Today’s workout: Real Hot Workout; 12 rounds (50 s/10 s), 3 exercises repeated 4 times My scores: one leg squat and jump tuck (alternating legs)–10, 10, 8, 8 santana zuzana push up (alternating sides)–7, 8.5, 8, 8.5 side jump and side lunge (alternating sides/legs)–13, 12, 12, 12
