The struggle of healthy living

The struggle is real. For me it’s always evolving. I see myself getting focused and on track and then the slightest thing will throw me off–moving, occupation changes, the temperature, the seasons (in New Orleans, that means carnival, festival, hurricane, etc.), and so on. Also, just getting older I’m finding out my body doesn’t handle certain foods the way it used to; or maybe it never did but it was easier to deal with when I was a teenager. For lent I gave up meat/dairy and hard liquor. There were, of course, some exceptions here and there, some cheat days and whatnot, but for the most part I stayed on track. I even got myself on a better exercise regimen, returning to a fitness website/blog I used to follow (Zuzka Light), where I can workout in my living room with little to no equipment. Overall, I feel better and (I think) look better, although I definitely missed my meat & eggs. I don’t have any plans of becoming a vegan anytime soon. But I do plan on making my …

INSANITY–2 weeks down

I’ve completed two weeks of INSANITY, and I honestly think I’m starting to see some results. I don’t have a scale so I don’t know how much or if I’ve actually lost pounds, but I feel like my clothes are starting to fit better, so that’s a plus. My problem is, that I think is a pretty common problem, is that I build muscle mass pretty quickly. So while I may be getting right and tight, I also get kinda bulky, especially my legs. I haven’t quite figured out the right formula of diet and exercise that allows me to get lean without getting big–maybe there isn’t one. Who knows? But every two weeks on the workout you have to do a fit test. The goal, of course, being to get better each time. There are 8 exercises and you do them each for a minute with a brief rest in between. I definitely improved on most exercises, only one stayed the same. Again, it’s very apparent that my weaknesses are really quad/glutes because anything …

Moving & Shaking, Day 11

Moving: So, um…yea. I didn’t quite get around to moving today. I maybe should have done the pike press exercise like I had planned to, but now it’s getting late and I am about to pull an all-nighter with my 5 hour energy and finish up my midterms. Plus my feet are still really sore from breaking in my fivefingers. I clearly overdid it. I did get some exercise though, running around in celebration of Holi. Holi (aka the Festival of Colors) is an Indian holiday that celebrates the coming of Spring and all its colors, as well as commemorating good harvests and fertile lands. I’m sure you’ve seen pictures of it, because the way people celebrate it is to throw vividly colored and perfumed powder on each other. It smelled like roses, and it was so pretty. But I was definitely a hot, caked up mess after all was said and done. AND different parts of my body are stained with the powder with streaks of green, pink, and purple. Ah well. Shaking: Dandelions …

Moving & Shaking, Day 10

Moving: Morning Run – 2.68 mi. I was going to do my normal BodyRockTV workout afterwards but a) my feet were KILLING me, and b) I really needed to go ahead and go to school and do some work. But really, my insteps are a mess, I spent most of the day limping because my feet and ankles were tore up. I did ice them at night (with the only frozen thing in my freezer–strawberries, lol), and while they were somewhat numb they felt better. But I think they will still be a mess. Shaking: Collard/Spicy Green Berries 1 cup collard greens 1 cup spicy greens 1 cup blueberries 1 banana 1 cup strawberries 2 cups water ice 2 maca root tablets 1 guarana tablet I’m posting a picture of the “spicy” greens. If someone could please tell me what type of green they are, that would be great!

Moving & Shaking, Day 9

Moving: Booty Shaping Workout, 12 min COMMANDO PUSH UP (My reps: 10, 8, 8, 9, 11, 10) SQUAT & PUSH KICK (My reps: 11, 11, 11, 11, 13, 13) SINGLE KNEE TUCK (My reps: 11, 9, 11, 10, 11, 12) PLUS, I finally started running with my downstairs neighbor. We’re aiming to do a 10k in April (although, I’m not sure it’ll happen). We did a short little run, maybe a mile long, but I wore my Vibram Five Fingers for the first time. My calves and insteps are quite sore, but I know it will get better. The funniest part of it all was running in the park nearby that is also a bird sanctuary. There was bird poop EVERYWHERE and there were so many different types of birds–roosters, hens, geese, ducks, etc. etc. Shaking: Cilantro Spice Smoothie (this was VERY spicy btw) 1/2 bunch of cilantro 1 red bell pepper 1 habañero pepper 1 – 2 cups mango juice from 1 lime a bit of salt some honey ice 2 maca root tablets …
