FOOD!

I’ve been on a cooking/baking spree lately. Or rather, maybe I’m just starting to get back to my old self from last semester where I was always in the kitchen. First, I decided to bake my first cake…ever. This, of course, required my purchasing a cake pan and all that business. Well, let me back up. Almost 3 years ago (dang) I went to Brazil for a semester study abroad. I bought souvenirs for everyone I felt like buying stuff for, so I bought my dad, who’s always cooking, a Brazilian cookbook and a few ingredients that you can’t commonly buy here in the states: stupid hot peppers, and dendê  (which is pretty much just palm oil). Well, it’s been 3 years and he still hasn’t cracked it open, SO I took it back. I really wanted to start exploring some of these recipes, so that’s where I took my cake recipe from. It’s called: Bolo Espera Marido (Hoping-for-a-husband Cake): Ingredients: 1 freshly grated coconut 1 cup warm milk 2 cups all-purpose flour 3 tbs …

Back to Work

I finally got a break from classes with spring break, most of which I spent in Destin, FL on the beach. If you’ve never been to Destin, it’s in the panhandle of Florida (which really shouldn’t be part of the Florida as the people are more like folks from southern Alabama, lol). There are white sandy beaches and emerald waters. Nothing much to do there but lay in the sun, shop, and eat seafood–which is fine by me. But there was something new this time…so I know there is this idea going around that Black people can’t get sunburned…IT’S A LIE! Got a sunburn, first ever, but it happened. My face and chest were reddened (in addition to being blackened) and sore. Happy to say though, after peeling these past few days, the worst is over and I’m left with a nice oven baked look. Best part of my week though was eating a plateful of snow crab legs–I need to get another few of those. Anyway, I’m back on the grind, back to work …

Moving & Shaking, Day 11

Moving: So, um…yea. I didn’t quite get around to moving today. I maybe should have done the pike press exercise like I had planned to, but now it’s getting late and I am about to pull an all-nighter with my 5 hour energy and finish up my midterms. Plus my feet are still really sore from breaking in my fivefingers. I clearly overdid it. I did get some exercise though, running around in celebration of Holi. Holi (aka the Festival of Colors) is an Indian holiday that celebrates the coming of Spring and all its colors, as well as commemorating good harvests and fertile lands. I’m sure you’ve seen pictures of it, because the way people celebrate it is to throw vividly colored and perfumed powder on each other. It smelled like roses, and it was so pretty. But I was definitely a hot, caked up mess after all was said and done. AND different parts of my body are stained with the powder with streaks of green, pink, and purple. Ah well. Shaking: Dandelions …

Moving & Shaking, Day 10

Moving: Morning Run – 2.68 mi. I was going to do my normal BodyRockTV workout afterwards but a) my feet were KILLING me, and b) I really needed to go ahead and go to school and do some work. But really, my insteps are a mess, I spent most of the day limping because my feet and ankles were tore up. I did ice them at night (with the only frozen thing in my freezer–strawberries, lol), and while they were somewhat numb they felt better. But I think they will still be a mess. Shaking: Collard/Spicy Green Berries 1 cup collard greens 1 cup spicy greens 1 cup blueberries 1 banana 1 cup strawberries 2 cups water ice 2 maca root tablets 1 guarana tablet I’m posting a picture of the “spicy” greens. If someone could please tell me what type of green they are, that would be great!
